From December 9 to 13, an international workshop was held at the University of Milan as part of the Erasmus Blended Intensive Program (BIP)organized by the University of Milan, coordinator prof. Cristina Scuderi and assistant Elisabetta Forlani.
Students from the University of Warsaw, the University of Augsburg, the Schola Cantorum Basel, and the University of Graz gathered in Milan for five intensive days to explore the workshop theme “The Violin Schools in Eighteenth-Century Europe. Pedagogical Challenges, Professionalism, Musical Networks.” In addition to presentations by the program students, there were also guest lectures by representatives from the universities of Padua, Pavia/Cremona, and Trieste.
The aim of the workshop was to bring together musicological research at various academic levels, to give students the opportunity for international exchange, and to shed light on different facets of a broad topic through intensive study: from the basic concepts of schools to specific case studies from the 18th century (Tartini, Corelli, Veracini, Leopold Mozart) and the present day (contemporary music education, the Suzuki method).
After the official welcome, the workshop opened with a lecture by Professor Sergio Durante (University of Padua), who is collaborating on our research project Tartinians in Europe, as is Giulio d’Angelo from the Conservatory of Trieste, who gave an insight into the editorial history of Giuseppe Tartini’s l’Arte del arco. In addition to the lectures, the students learned about the architecture, history, and cultural heritage of Milan on various guided tours in a varied afternoon program including a visit to the library of the Conservatorio G. Verdi and the Museum of Musical Instruments at the Castello Sforzesco.
